2008 Fall Town Meeting is now over. Overall the Town was successful in maintaining fiscal responsibility, with the majority approving several innovative articles where our town will benefit solidly. The solar Articles passed with slight contention, but the town can now utilize stagnant money and receive matching funds to invest in green energy systems. An article passed to charge detail fees for our town cruisers that private companies hire. One important Article unfortunately did not pass was to give $25,000 to the Preservation of land, this is extremely important to the town in order to help retain the natural beauty of Rehoboth. As for the DRHS Septic System Articles it was a close call at various times, some tried to table article 13, when that failed they attempted to amend 13 to be article 14. Finally Article 13 was passed at $650,000, with the vote count at 241 to 185. The last ditch effort then was the attempt to pass Article 14 also! The Town Meeting voted no and Article 14 for the 1.2 million dollars was finally defeated. Thank you to all who attended and voted! Because of you the Town has won and most importantly our children have won. Now because of our efforts the money that the School Committee does have can be spent appropriately and on the education of our children.
Town Meeting can be an arduous task and because of that attendance tends to be low in comparison to the voting population. As was the case with this meeting some extremely important issues are decided in this forum by only a few hundred people. Please always attend Town Meeting and assist and encourage your friends, neighbors and relatives to as well. |
